My own objectives
- To be a "yau di yeah" person
* yau di yeah (有啲野): have a little difference but cannot describe it clearly
* "yau di yeah" person usually can think critical, deep and have a wide horizon
My intended learning outcomes for this course
- to have a new perceptive
- to learn how to do a good research (like framming, analyse the data and the expression)
- to know more possibilities of different mediums of researches
- to review the previous works (research-based) I have done and try to improve them
- to learn how to make senible decisions during the research
- to examine some ideas of my FYP
Hope I can achieve my own objective from these learning outcomes:)
Initial idea of the project
Project:
to make a documentary by following one person for 24 hours
Subject:
Ivy Yeung
Why? 1. Easy to follow. We are roommates and classmates.
2. I wanna to know more abt my good fd
3. She is a direct person and willing to share.
Ideas:
1. (Let me describe it in Chinese.)
a very thoughtful plan, Doris.
ReplyDeleteIt seems very much like a creative brief, and you know 'too much' what you're going to include in the final work.
This is probably fine if your project is just a documentary idea.
Ethnographic research is different. You're only supposed to set up the minimal in order to prepare the 'field' ready for your fieldwork. You should allow yourself a lot of room to observe and record with the presence of your camera.
I think the general idea is fine -- Ivy, interaction between the researcher and the researched subject, the virtual space. I would like you to think more along the line of the practical issues and shooting arrangement that would allow the field work to bring you a lot of useful data for discovery.
The final edited version should be the result of your thorough analysis of things (footage + audio + experience + memory + thoughts) generated from the field work. This means narrative strategy needs not be contemplated too early - at least no need in this initial phase.
Lastly, you may or may not need to follow someone for 24 hours in order to complete a research with the title "A day in the life of x"... But of course you can -- but then you should think of how unique this approach is compared to other possible approaches.
Good beginning.

Thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteI know more about the difference between the documentary and the ethnographic research. It is truly that the researcher should not give too much assumption on the final stage. The interpretation should be based on the collected data and analysis. I must remind myself on it.
I try to adjust the original plan. For the first idea (the virtual space), I will keep an eye on Ivy's computer and information on the Internet (like Facebook). Her virtual space is my frame. However, I find there are many problems I need to solve.
1. my presence?
2. time?
3. subject? 睇file, msn conservation history, facebook 定blog?
Different selections can lead different results. In front of these choices, I find I should learn to access and make decision.
Compared with the second ideas, the first one is more challenging for me. The rules of the second idea has already set detailed framming.
Just wanna to share what I am stuggling. It is a time to talk with my groupmate - Ivy.
Be strong and get set go!!!
Doris
Good thinking.
ReplyDeleteBe careful with interviews. Ethnography is primarily about 'being there, observing, and creating documents'... Interview is a special action. Use it only when there's a specific purpose, or if the subject speech activity is part of what you are studying, or you do want your subject's verbal explanation to be recorded.
In the case of virtual space, one interesting question would be how to re-define the meaning of "actions" or "activities" as it seems the only thing one can do is writing or uploading. So the question could be: what are the different things people "do" on the internet as opposed to when they are in real physical settings in our everyday life?
How much you've got to observe Ivy and how much conversation... -- these are all things you can agree upon together.
I do find the idea of two persons packed in a room for 24 hours very interesting. One kind of ethnographic research is called 'participatory research' (also something called 'participant observation') -- i.e. the researcher is also part of the space being studied, and a member of that community, rather than just a quiet, distant observer. This kind of research calls your attention to 'interaction' -- how you interact AND the effect of that interaction on the data and findings in the end.
Now time for decision and action...
